Triethyl Citrate

Triethyl citrate is the triethyl ester of citric acid, a naturally occurring compound found in citrus fruits. In cosmetics it functions primarily as a deodorant active by inhibiting the lipase enzymes produced by skin bacteria, thereby preventing the breakdown of sweat lipids into odour-causing fatty acids. It is also used as a plasticiser in film-forming formulations and as a masking agent to soften unwanted chemical odours.
