Formula IngredientAntioxidant, Humectant, Skin ConditioningINCI: Ectoin
Ectoin is a naturally occurring extremolyte — a protective compound first discovered in 1985 in extremophilic bacteria (Halomonas elongata) inhabiting harsh environments such as salt lakes. It works by binding water molecules to form stabilising hydration shells around biomolecules, which shields skin cells from environmental stressors including UV radiation, pollution, temperature extremes, and blue light. In skincare, it functions as an antioxidant, humectant, and barrier-strengthening agent.

Ectoin is exceptionally well-tolerated. Clinical studies at concentrations up to 7% — well above typical cosmetic use — showed a superb tolerance profile in both adult and child populations. Rare side effects at therapeutic concentrations (7%) may include transient burning, tingling, or redness, which typically resolves with continued use. No EU CosIng Annex II or III restrictions apply. Suitable for sensitive and reactive skin.
Ectoin does not increase photosensitivity. It actually offers photoprotective benefits — at 0.5% concentration it has been shown to provide significant protection to Langerhans immune cells against UV damage. It cannot replace SPF, however, and daily sunscreen use is still recommended.
Ectoin is considered safe to use during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and when trying to conceive. Its natural origin, lack of systemic absorption, and gentle mechanism of action support a low-risk profile. No reproductive or developmental concerns have been identified in available safety data. As with all skincare ingredients during pregnancy, consulting a healthcare provider is advisable.
