Glucosylrutin

INCI: Glucosylrutin

Glucosylrutin (also known as alpha-glucosylrutin or AGR) is a water-soluble, glycosylated derivative of rutin — a bioflavonoid found naturally in plants. The glucose molecule attached to rutin dramatically improves its skin bioavailability and stability compared to rutin alone, allowing it to penetrate the epidermis effectively. It works by scavenging free radicals, neutralising reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by UV radiation, and protecting against UVA-induced photooxidative damage in skin cells.

Is Glucosylrutin safe? Key considerations

Can Glucosylrutin cause irritation?

Low Risk

Glucosylrutin is well tolerated at cosmetic concentrations. No EU CosIng Annex II or III restrictions apply. Multiple clinical studies involving topical application have not reported significant irritation. The bioflavonoid class is generally considered non-irritating. Sensitive skin types are unlikely to experience adverse reactions.

Does Glucosylrutin increase sun sensitivity?

No Risk

Glucosylrutin does not increase photosensitivity — in fact, it is used specifically to protect against UV-induced oxidative stress. Clinical evidence (Rippke et al., 2001) demonstrates that topical pre-treatment reduces UVA-induced photooxidation. No SPF precautions are required based on its presence in a formulation.

Is Glucosylrutin safe during pregnancy?

MANUAL REVIEW: No dedicated pregnancy safety studies identified for topical glucosylrutin. As a flavonoid antioxidant with low systemic absorption at cosmetic concentrations, it is generally considered low risk, but data is limited. Consult a healthcare provider if concerned.

No specific pregnancy safety data was found for topical glucosylrutin. Rutin and flavonoids are generally regarded as low risk at cosmetic concentrations due to minimal systemic absorption. No reproductive or developmental red flags were identified in available safety literature. Classified as MANUAL REVIEW due to absence of dedicated pregnancy safety studies.
