Lauryl Glucoside

INCI: Lauryl Glucoside

Lauryl glucoside is a mild, non-ionic surfactant derived from plant sources — typically coconut or palm kernel oil combined with glucose. It belongs to the alkyl polyglucoside family and works by lowering water's surface tension, enabling gentle removal of oils, dirt, and impurities without harsh stripping. It is biodegradable, EcoCert-approved, and widely used as a gentler alternative to sulfate-based surfactants.

Is Lauryl Glucoside safe? Key considerations

Can Lauryl Glucoside cause irritation?

Low Risk

The CIR Expert Panel concluded that alkyl glucoside ingredients, including lauryl glucoside, are safe for use in cosmetics when formulated to be non-irritating. Clinical tests found products containing alkyl glucosides were not dermal irritants or sensitizers. Its sugar-based structure makes it less likely to irritate or dry out the skin. Rare contact dermatitis may occur in individuals with specific alkyl polyglucoside allergies. EWG rates it a 1 (lowest hazard). No EU CosIng Annex II or III restrictions apply.

Does Lauryl Glucoside increase sun sensitivity?

No Risk

Lauryl glucoside does not increase photosensitivity. No sun protection precautions are required based on its presence in a formulation.

Is Lauryl Glucoside safe during pregnancy?

Safe

The CIR Expert Panel found that lauryl glucoside was not a reproductive or developmental toxicant. It is considered safe by the Safe Cosmetics Database, GoodGuide, EcoCert, and the Organic Food Federation. No known extra risk from topical use during pregnancy.
