Pinus pinaster bark extract is well tolerated at typical cosmetic concentrations. No EU CosIng Annex II or III restrictions apply. It is not a known sensitiser, though individuals with pine or conifer allergies should patch test before use.
Pinus pinaster bark extract does not increase photosensitivity. Research suggests it may offer mild photoprotective benefits by scavenging UV-induced free radicals, though it should not replace sunscreen.
MANUAL REVIEW: Topical use of pine bark extract at cosmetic concentrations is not well studied in pregnancy. Oral Pycnogenol supplementation during pregnancy has limited safety data and is generally advised against. For topical cosmetic use, the low systemic absorption suggests low risk, but consult a healthcare provider.
