Resveratrol

INCI: Resveratrol

Resveratrol is a naturally occurring polyphenol antioxidant found primarily in red grape skins and seeds, as well as in berries and Japanese knotweed. It works by neutralising free radicals generated by UV exposure and environmental pollution, protecting skin cells from oxidative damage and reducing inflammation at a cellular level. It is also studied for its anticarcinogenic properties and ability to support skin barrier integrity.

Is Resveratrol safe? Key considerations

Can Resveratrol cause irritation?

Low Risk

Resveratrol is well-tolerated at typical cosmetic concentrations (0.2–3%). No EU CosIng Annex II or III restrictions apply. It has anti-inflammatory properties that may actually calm irritation rather than cause it. Sensitivity reactions are rare but possible in individuals with polyphenol sensitivities.

Does Resveratrol increase sun sensitivity?

No Risk

Resveratrol does not increase photosensitivity. It is frequently combined with vitamin C and ferulic acid in antioxidant serums precisely because it helps protect against UV-induced oxidative stress. SPF is always recommended as good practice, but resveratrol itself does not make skin more sun-sensitive.

Is Resveratrol safe during pregnancy?

Caution

Topical resveratrol has limited safety data specific to pregnancy. Oral resveratrol supplements are generally advised against during pregnancy due to potential effects on hormone signalling and fetal development at high doses. Topical absorption is low and considered low risk, but out of caution pregnant individuals should consult a healthcare provider before use.
