Formula IngredientAbsorbent/MattifierINCI: Silica
Silica (silicon dioxide) is a naturally occurring mineral that is the major component of sand and glass. In cosmetics, it is used in finely powdered or microsphere form as an oil-absorbing, mattifying agent that keeps skin looking shine-free. It also functions as a viscosity controller, bulking agent, and abrasive (in scrubs), and can help suspend insoluble particles in formulations.

Cosmetic-grade amorphous silica is well tolerated on the skin. It is chemically inert and does not penetrate the skin barrier. The CIR Expert Panel has reviewed silica and silicates and concluded they are safe as used in cosmetics. No EU CosIng Annex II or III restrictions apply. Note: crystalline silica (quartz) is a respiratory hazard when inhaled, but cosmetic formulations use amorphous silica which does not carry the same risk.
Silica does not increase photosensitivity. No sun protection precautions are required.
Amorphous silica is chemically inert with no systemic absorption from topical use. No reproductive or developmental concerns are documented.

Individuals with very dry skin (may find mattifying effect uncomfortable) should review the considerations above before use.
