Formula IngredientViscosity Controller, Emulsion Stabiliser

Sodium Polyacrylate

INCI: Sodium Polyacrylate

Sodium Polyacrylate is a superabsorbent synthetic polymer (sodium salt of polyacrylic acid) sometimes called 'waterlock' for its extraordinary water-binding capacity — it can absorb 100 to 1,000 times its own mass in water. In cosmetics, it functions as a viscosity controller, emulsion stabiliser, film former, and absorbent, thickening water-based formulas and maintaining stable emulsions.

Is Sodium Polyacrylate safe? Key considerations

Can Sodium Polyacrylate cause irritation?

Low Risk

Generally well tolerated at typical cosmetic concentrations. Large polymer molecules have negligible skin penetration. The CIR Expert Panel has assessed sodium polyacrylate as safe for cosmetic use. No EU CosIng Annex II or III restrictions apply.

Does Sodium Polyacrylate increase sun sensitivity?

No Risk

Does not increase photosensitivity. No sun protection precautions are required.

Is Sodium Polyacrylate safe during pregnancy?

Safe

No known pregnancy concerns. Large polymer molecule with negligible skin penetration and no systemic activity.
