Sorbitan Oleate

INCI: Sorbitan Oleate

Sorbitan oleate is a sorbitan ester formed by bonding sorbitol (a sugar-derived alcohol) with oleic acid, a fatty acid derived from plant or animal oils. It functions as an oil-loving (lipophilic) emulsifier that helps blend water and oil phases into stable, homogeneous formulations. It also acts as a wetting and dispersing agent, keeping insoluble particles such as pigments and mineral UV filters (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) evenly distributed throughout a product.

Is Sorbitan Oleate safe? Key considerations

Can Sorbitan Oleate cause irritation?

Low Risk

INCIDecoder rates sorbitan oleate at 0 for irritancy (minimal irritation risk). The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel assessed sorbitan esters as a class and concluded they are safe in cosmetics as currently used. No EU CosIng Annex II or III restrictions apply. Individuals with very sensitive skin may occasionally experience a reaction; patch testing is advisable.

Does Sorbitan Oleate increase sun sensitivity?

No Risk

Sorbitan oleate is an emulsifier with no photosensitising properties. It does not increase UV sensitivity and is commonly used in sunscreen formulations to help disperse mineral UV filters. No additional sun protection measures are required due to this ingredient.

Is Sorbitan Oleate safe during pregnancy?

Safe

Limited but reassuring data. The CIR Expert Panel (2002) found no reproductive or developmental toxicity data of concern for sorbitan esters: fatty acid components are normal dietary constituents, and related sorbitan esters showed no embryotoxic or teratogenic effects in animal studies at doses up to 1000 mg/kg/day. Motherfigure classifies it as presenting no known risk based on available evidence.

Individuals with acne-prone skin (moderate comedogenic risk), fungal acne (pityrosporum folliculitis), very sensitive skin (patch test recommended) should review the considerations above before use.
