Formula IngredientEmulsifierINCI: Sorbitan Olivate
Sorbitan Olivate is a natural emulsifier derived from the esterification of sorbitol with the fatty acids of olive oil. It is best known as one half of the Olivem 1000 system (paired with Cetearyl Olivate), where it acts as the HLB-lowering co-emulsifier that generates biomimetic liquid crystal structures closely resembling the skin's own lamellar structure. This unique property allows it to enhance penetration of active ingredients and deliver a deeply moisturising, non-greasy feel.

Sorbitan Olivate is considered non-irritating for the vast majority of skin types. The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel, reviewing sorbitan esters as a class, concluded they are safe as used in cosmetic formulations. Clinical testing of sorbitan fatty acid esters showed minimal to mild skin irritation at most and no sensitisation. No EU CosIng Annex II or III restrictions apply. Individuals with very sensitive skin may occasionally experience mild irritation; patch testing is recommended.
Sorbitan Olivate is an emulsifier with no photosensitising properties. It does not increase UV sensitivity and requires no additional sun protection precautions. It is commonly used in sunscreen formulations and rated as a compatible SPF carrier.
Sorbitan Olivate is considered low risk during pregnancy. The CIR safety assessment (2002, reaffirmed subsequently) found no reproductive or developmental toxicity data of concern: fatty acid components are normal dietary constituents, and sorbitol showed no adverse reproductive effects in multigenerational rat studies at relevant doses. Related sorbitan esters showed no embryotoxic or teratogenic effects in animal studies. Motherfigure classifies it as presenting no known risk based on available evidence.
