Tocopherol

INCI: Tocopherol

Tocopherol is the INCI name for Vitamin E, a fat-soluble antioxidant that occurs naturally in human skin. It works by neutralising free radicals generated by UV exposure and environmental pollution, protecting cell membranes and lipids from oxidative damage. It also has emollient properties that help reinforce the skin barrier and retain moisture.

Is Tocopherol safe? Key considerations

Can Tocopherol cause irritation?

Low Risk

Tocopherol is very well tolerated at cosmetic concentrations and is not considered an irritant. Rarely, individuals with tocopherol sensitivity may experience contact dermatitis; those with known Vitamin E allergy should patch test. No EU Annex II or III restrictions apply.

Does Tocopherol increase sun sensitivity?

No Risk

Tocopherol does not increase photosensitivity. On the contrary, it provides some photoprotective benefit against UVB-induced damage and works synergistically with Vitamin C for broader antioxidant UV defence. No special sun precautions are required.

Is Tocopherol safe during pregnancy?

Safe

Topical tocopherol is widely considered safe during pregnancy at cosmetic use levels. It is not associated with teratogenic risk when applied to the skin. Note: despite popular belief, applying Vitamin E to surgical scars or stretch marks has not been proven effective and may worsen some scarring — consult a healthcare provider.

How does Tocopherol work?

Tocopherol is the INCI name for Vitamin E, a fat-soluble antioxidant that occurs naturally in human skin. It works by neutralising free radicals generated by UV exposure and environmental pollution, protecting cell membranes and lipids from oxidative damage. It also has emollient properties that help reinforce the skin barrier and retain moisture.

Individuals with known Vitamin E (tocopherol) allergy or contact sensitivity should review the considerations above before use.
