Cyclodextrin

Cyclodextrin is a ring-shaped carbohydrate (cyclic oligosaccharide) derived from natural starch (typically corn or potato) through enzymatic breakdown. Its distinctive donut-shaped structure has a hydrophilic outer surface and a lipophilic hollow inner cavity, allowing it to encapsulate other molecules — trapping actives, fragrances, or oils without altering their structure. In cosmetics it functions as both an absorbent (reducing excess oil and sweat) and a chelating agent (binding metal ions that can destabilise formulations or trigger irritation).
