Formula IngredientThickener/StabiliserINCI: Disteardimonium Hectorite
Disteardimonium hectorite is an organically modified clay mineral derived from hectorite (a naturally occurring smectite clay). It is produced by reacting hectorite with distearyl dimethyl ammonium chloride, which makes the clay dispersible in oils and organic solvents. It functions as a viscosity controller and stabiliser in oil-based and water-in-oil formulations, preventing pigment settling and improving the texture and water resistance of products.

Disteardimonium hectorite is well tolerated at cosmetic concentrations. It is a large molecular weight clay complex that sits on the skin surface and does not penetrate. The CIR Expert Panel has reviewed hectorite and its derivatives and concluded they are safe as used in cosmetics. No EU CosIng Annex II or III restrictions apply.
Disteardimonium hectorite does not increase photosensitivity. No sun protection precautions are required.
Disteardimonium hectorite is an inert clay mineral with no systemic absorption from topical use. No reproductive or developmental concerns are documented.
