Formula IngredientUV Filter

Ethylhexyl Salicylate

INCI: Ethylhexyl Salicylate

Ethylhexyl salicylate (also known as octisalate) is a synthetic UVB-absorbing sunscreen agent with peak absorbance at 306 nm. It is an oil-soluble ester of salicylic acid and 2-ethylhexanol that protects skin from UVB radiation (280–320 nm) that causes sunburn. It is not a potent filter on its own and is typically combined with other UV filters to boost overall SPF; it also helps solubilise other solid UV filters in formulations.

Is Ethylhexyl Salicylate safe? Key considerations

Can Ethylhexyl Salicylate cause irritation?

Low Risk

INCIDecoder rates irritancy at 0. It is generally well tolerated and considered non-sensitising. EU CosIng lists it under Annex VI (entry 20) as a permitted UV filter with a maximum concentration of 5% in the EU and 5% in the US. No Annex II or III restrictions apply.

Does Ethylhexyl Salicylate increase sun sensitivity?

No Risk

This ingredient is itself a UV filter and does not increase photosensitivity. It is used specifically to protect skin from UVB radiation.

Is Ethylhexyl Salicylate safe during pregnancy?

Caution

As a chemical UV filter, limited data exist on systemic absorption during pregnancy. FDA studies have shown some sunscreen actives are absorbed into the bloodstream at low levels, though clinical significance is unclear. Mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) are generally preferred during pregnancy as a precaution. Consult a healthcare provider.
