Polyisobutene

INCI: Polyisobutene

Polyisobutene is a synthetic polymer of isobutylene (2-methyl-1-propene). It functions as a film-forming agent, viscosity controller, and binding agent in cosmetic formulations. It enhances gloss in lip cosmetics, increases product adhesion and wear longevity, and when combined with emulsifiers creates effective thickening systems. It also provides emollient and moisturising properties.

Is Polyisobutene safe? Key considerations

Can Polyisobutene cause irritation?

Low Risk

Polyisobutene is well tolerated. EWG rates it as safe with a hazard score of 1 (lowest). No EU CosIng Annex II or III restrictions apply. It is a non-reactive polymer with minimal sensitisation potential.

Does Polyisobutene increase sun sensitivity?

No Risk

Polyisobutene does not increase photosensitivity. No sun protection precautions are required.

Is Polyisobutene safe during pregnancy?

Safe

A synthetic polymer with no known reproductive or developmental toxicity. Considered safe for topical use during pregnancy at cosmetic concentrations.
